Nassau Harbor getting $70 million deeper

Read storyIn about a month, the government will close a $70 million deal to dredge Nassau Harbour and extend Arawak Cay.

Bids from seven companies - all foreign – were considered. A Bahamian company did submit a bid but did not meet prequalifications.

The project is expected to take nine months and will allow the harbor to accommodate new, larger cruise ships.

It is expected to more than double the length of Arawak Cay, which was chosen as a project partially because it was the most economical way to use the material dug up from the harbor.

We don't need more cruise ship visitors. Those ships dump their wastes in our water and on our land and bring barely any income for the economy. Cruise visitors spend less than $100 in port, and many of them don't even bother to disembark.

We'd love to tell ourselves and each other that the aim is to have cruise visitors see the country and return. Maybe for some people that's true but it's naive. The vast majority of cruise visitors are not returning. Cruise visitors in amounts beyond our carrying capacity are doing our little land far too much damage.

I do believe that my country is too preoccupied with counting the number of visitors that come here when we should be counting the amount of dollars those visitors spend and rating their experiences. Our lovely Bahamaland is no longer the leader in the Caribbean. We need to get over that and get back to #1 instead of trying to delude everyone.
